Vinicom ensures distribution of Howard’s Folly

Vinicom ensures from now on the exclusive representation in the national market of wines from producer Howard’s Folly. With the addition of Howard’s Folly to our portfolio, Vinicom expands the range of Alentejo producers where we already had the Bojador and Tangente projects.

For Duarte Sousa Coutinho, commercial director at Vinicom, «the Alentejo region has a very consolidated reputation in the national and foreign markets and has been able to reinvent itself and present new projects such as Howard’s Folly. We’re excited to have a producer with the profile and positioning of Howard’s Folly and whose potential for growth in sales and awareness is huge.”

Howard’s Folly was created in 2002 by the British businessman and art collector Howard Bilton and the Australian David Baverstock, an unavoidable name in winemaking in Portugal where he has worked in companies such as Esporão, Symington Family Estates, Quinta do Crasto or Ravasqueira. Although the winery is located in the city of Estremoz, the vineyards are located in the Portalegre area, where they benefit from the freshness of the Serra de São Mamede.

Howard’s Folly is committed to the production of small batches of premium wines based on old vines of varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira, Aragonez, Castelão or Syrah. The company also produces a liqueur wine from Carcavelos resulting from a field blend of varieties such as Arinto, Galego Dourado, Boal, Rabo de Ovelha or João Santarém.

Howard’s Folly wines are now available on Vinicom website and can be purchased HERE.

Celebrating another International Port Wine Day

January 27th is once again marked by the worldwide celebration of a true national icon: Port Wine. The International Port Wine Day initiative was created in 2012 by the north-american institution Center for Wine Origins, of which the Port and Douro Wines Institute is part.

Port Wine is a fortified wine produced exclusively from grapes from the Demarcated Region of the Douro. Despite being produced with Douro grapes and stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, this drink became known as “Port Wine” from the second half of the 17th century onwards because it was exported all over the world from this city.

What makes Port Wine different from other wines, in addition to the unique climate, is the fact that the fermentation of the wine is interrupted by the addition of wine brandy. Thus, Port Wine is naturally sweet and stronger than other wines.

James Suckling awards between 90 and 92 points five reds from Lavradores de Feitoria

The renowned American wine critic James Suckling tasted several reds from Lavradores de Feitoria and the results are great, starting with the 2016 vintage of Três Bagos Grande Escolha Red, which isn’t in the market yet, which got 92 points and described by the critic as a polished wine, very seductive and that can still remain some more time in the cellar of the Douro producer.

Also the Meruge Red 2017 received 92 points and in it Suckling highlights the aromas of dehydrated cherries, currants, praline, dried leaves, dried flower petals and spices. It presents medium body, elegant tannins, freshness and good acidity.

The critic also awarded with 92 points the Quinta da Costa das Aguaneiras, which he considers a full-bodied red, with firm and chewy tannins. A rich and polished wine, which is ready to drink, but will make a splash from 2022.

With 91 points, Três Bagos Reserve Red 2017 features aromas of wild blackberries, dried violets and black olives, with hints of mushrooms and smoked meat. On the palate, reveals firm and elegant tannins integrated with a good acidity.

Finally the Lavradores de Feitoria Red, from the 2018 vintage, James Suckling rated it with 90 points and describes it as a juicy and tasty wine, with aromas of black cherry, violets, dried herbs and oysters. It has medium body, with fine and firm tannins.

Meruge White 2018 gets 93 points from James Suckling

Meruge White 2018 received 93 points and was featured in a list of eleven exciting Portuguese whites for sale in the USA under $40 by the renowned American wine critic James Suckling.

In the article published on the critic’s website, available HERE, this wine from the Douro producer Lavradores de Feitoria is described as a “lovely wine, very rich and complex, with a noticeable presence of lemon, honey, some dehydrated mango and a touch of cream and praline. It’s full-bodied, has an enveloping and creamy texture and a very tasty aftertaste».

In the opinion of James Suckling, it’s a white wine ready to drink, but which promises to evolve in a bottle, recommending keeping some bottles to “test” over the years.

Meruge White 2018 is a monovarietal Viosinho wine, from vines over 50 years old, fermented and aged in Portuguese oak barrels. It can be purchased on our website HERE.
