Celebrating another International Port Wine Day

January 27th is once again marked by the worldwide celebration of a true national icon: Port Wine. The International Port Wine Day initiative was created in 2012 by the north-american institution Center for Wine Origins, of which the Port and Douro Wines Institute is part.

Port Wine is a fortified wine produced exclusively from grapes from the Demarcated Region of the Douro. Despite being produced with Douro grapes and stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, this drink became known as “Port Wine” from the second half of the 17th century onwards because it was exported all over the world from this city.

What makes Port Wine different from other wines, in addition to the unique climate, is the fact that the fermentation of the wine is interrupted by the addition of wine brandy. Thus, Port Wine is naturally sweet and stronger than other wines.

New vintages of Três Bagos

The new vintages of the Três Bagos range from Lavradores de Feitoria are already on the market. The whites Três Bagos Sauvignon Blanc and Três Bagos Reserve White are from 2020, while the Três Bagos Reserve Red has the 2018 vintage.

The Três Bagos Reserve White and Red are like brothers: they’re both blended wines, partially aged in wood and combine three typical Douro grape varieties from the three subregions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. In Três Bagos Reserve White, Viosinho, Rabigato and Gouveio; and in Três Bagos Reserve Red, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, from vineyards over 30 years old.

Três Bagos Grande Escolha Red featured on The Wine Show

The wine Três Bagos Grande Escolha Red, of Lavradores de Feitoria, was one of the protagonists of the third season of The Wine Show, the famous tv show hosted by wine experts Joe Fattorini and Amelia Singer, and with the participation of four actors and wine enthusiasts: Matthew Goode, James Purefoy, Matthew Rhys and Dominic West.

It premiered last Saturday, at 24 Kitchen Portugal, and Lavradores de Feitoria was represented by its CEO, Olga Martins. An experience that became even more breathtaking when Joe Fattorini chose the wine that represents the future of the Douro Valley. Out of three Douro wines, Três Bagos Grande Escolha Red was the chosen to integrate the box that will represent the best of this season in wines.

The 2016 vintage of Três Bagos Late Harvest was launched

After the 2010 and 2011 vintages, the long-awaited Late Harvest 2016 from Lavradores de Feitoria was finally released. It’s a white wine, of exquisite sweetness, very peculiar in production and created to fill the absence of a dessert wine in the portfolio of Lavradores de Feitoria.

Três Bagos Late Harvest 2016 is exclusively made from the Sémillon variety, with the bunches being harvested after the usual harvest time when the grapes are botrytized, that is, affected by the so-called noble rot. It underwent careful fermentation and at low temperatures, followed by aging in French oak barrels for a year.

Displays a lively and bright golden straw color, a very exuberant aroma, with citrus hints, nuances of fig, honey and some apricot, and a very pleasant, fresh and full palate.

Três Bagos Late Harvest 2016 is a limited edition of 3.140 bottles and is now available in our Online Shop.
