QUINTA DO VALE MEÃO

BACK TO PRODUCERS

One of the properties of D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira

In 1877, D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already the owner of the largest agricultural property in the Douro, bought 300 hectares of virgin land at public auction from the town council of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Her dream was to build a model farm from scratch, putting into practice all the vast experience she had accumulated over her life as a businesswoman in the Douro.

This ambitious project was completed between 1887 and 1895. It was the last and most significant achievement of “Ferreirinha”, who however enjoyed little of it, as she died in 1896.

Since then, Quinta do Vale Meão has always remained in the possession of his descendants. As from the 70’s, his great-great-grandson Francisco Javier de Olazabal took over its management and started a long process of acquisition of undivided shares from his relatives and co-owners and, in 1994, he became, together with his sons, the only owner of the Estate.

“It was in 1877 that “Ferreirinha”, already the owner of the largest agricultural estate in the Douro, bought 300 hectares of virgin land from the Câmara de VN de Foz Côa in a public auction.”
